Move Your Body

Posted by: Dr. Cathy on 1/4/2012
Want to lose weight this year? Move your body!

Want to feel younger? Move your body!

Want to decrease your risk of developing arthritis? Move your body!

While nutrition definitely plays a huge role in your overall health, exercise will truly be the deciding factor when it comes to managing your weight. Flexibility and range of motion can be improved through regular exercise and proper stretching. Full body cardiovascular exercise such as walking, jogging or swimming is most effective for maintaining weight and mobility. Resistance exercises are necessary to increase muscle mass and therefore metabolism; essential for weight loss and long term weight management.

No fancy equipment is needed, although it helps prevent boredom from routine if you have access. Go for a walk, dance around the house, take the stairs at work…find smalll ways to add more movement in your daily routine and you will start to look and feel better.

Next time you are running errands, why not park as far away from the building as possible to give yourself a nice walk. Group your errands together so you can park in one area and walk to several locations. Bust out the stroller; babies love a change of scenery.

    • On these beautiful, warm summer nights, why not go for a walk? If you're cooking dinner, make something that can go in the oven. While it's baking, head outside for a walk. Take the baby, your husband, a friend, your dog or just go it alone. Great way to burn off calories, release some stress, clear your mind and work up an appetite for dinner. Enjoy!

    • Walking Lunges! Been on vacation for a few weeks and have been taking the babies to the beach every day...lots of walking in the sand which is soooo great physically and mentally. I think it helps ground you to get your toes in the sand. Thinking of building a 200 foot long sandbox somewhere in my yard to walk in, but that's another story altogether. Anyway, we're on vacation and we took the babies for a walk to the park. On the way back I started doing walking lunges - felt so good. My almost 3 year old says "do more mommy" so I do. And then again, and then again. The rest of the way home, I did walking lunges next to their wagon as my husband pulled them. They laughed and smiled, I had a great leg workout, my husband had a good workout pulling them and the babies saw a great example of mommy and daddy taking care of themselves through exercise. Life is good!

    • Do you own a set of weights? Want to buy some but don't want to spend too much money? Did you know that most people who buy fitness equipment never use it? Some never even take it out of the packaging. Good news for you is they eventually get rid of it. Check out yard sales, garage sales, consignment stores, thrift stores and Goodwill stores. You'll be surprised at what people get rid of.

    • I took your advice and went to the local thrift store. Got some baby clothes that still had tags on them, an exercise ball and some light weights. I'm looking forward to starting The Ten Thousand with Dr. Cathy to get in the best shape of my life.
